The ticking noise you heard could be the fuel injectors. I'm lucky I did it when I did.popped the valve covers off and I could nearly skip a tooth by hand because of the chain slack. Fast forward to 110k and she was getting really loud. I couldn't afford to fix so I left it as-is. I purchased my truck with 30k on the clock and I started getting the timing chain slap/rattle sound at about 40k. Ford recalled the 97-00 Explorers for this issue on this engine but only issued a TSB for the Rangers with this engine. They still wear out though and yours might fall under that category. It was a poor design that was apparently updated in mid '03 model year. It's quite common for 01-03 4.0 SOHC's to experience timing chain problems.namely in the tensioner and guide region.
